The other night, I made homemade stroganoff. I was craving the creamy flavor, so I found a recipe and off I went. You might be amazed to learn this simple fact: REAL stroganoff is nothing like the stuff from the box! Boxed stroganoff was a childhood staple. It was a cream color and you just added beef and milk. Real stroganoff is only akin to the boxed stuff in that there are noodles and beef (though my recipe was a vegetarian one, so nix the beef). It had tomato paste and green beans. Guess what? Tomato paste makes it red! no creamy alfredo colored. Gasp!
For the record, the "real" stuff is pretty good. Definitely different than the box - so brace yourself. I made it in the crock pot and it was tasty. Actually, I am eating the leftovers right now - thus my inspiration to share my surprise with you. Enjoy!
Note - spell check doesn't like "stroganoff" and tries to make it "estrogen" Coincidence?? Hmmm.
